Our History
Building a foundation of accessible dental care for Charlottesville’s children
A shared vision for a healthier community
Charlottesville Area Dental Access (dba Community Dental Center) began with a clear mission: to provide dental access to every person who needs it.
Our founders, Judy Smith (retired director of the local CHiP Program), Dr. William Viglione (philanthropist and private dentist), and Dr. Peyton Weary (retired chairman of the UVa Department of Dermatology), recognized a critical gap in our healthcare system. There were a great many families, especially children, in need of quality dental care, but lacked the means to access it.
Dr. Bill Hunt and Robert Tobey, CPA, joined them, and together, they dedicated three years to securing the resources needed to launch a care center.
Opening our doors
In February 2005, Community Dental Center officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We opened our doors in August of that year with a small but dedicated team of one dentist and two staff members.
Since then, we have expanded to nine staff members and continue to grow to meet the needs of our community.
